'Is My Son Getting Enough?' & The Illusion More Is Always Better
Every Parent wants to give their child the best opportunity to succeed. But is doing more always better? The illusion that youth Soccer Players play less in America than Europe is not correct!
Unfortunately, there is limited literature on this in America, so I would like to provide some guidelines on what Ajax and the English Football League enforce.
English Football League Official Guidelines
- English Football League:

At a Category 1 (highest) Football Academy in England U9 & U10 aged Players receive 4 hours of training per week. At U11 or U12 this can rise to a maximum of 8 hours. Category 2 (majority) Football Academies it is 3 hours at U9 & 10 and a maximum of 5 hours at U11 & U12.
Ajax Academy's Approach
The World Famous Ajax (Amsterdam) Academy has similar views to the English Football League:

But one element of the academy’s success is that the boys are not overplayed, so the hours at De Toekomst are all business. Through age 12, they train only three times a week and play one game on the weekend. “For the young ones, we think that’s enough,” Riekerink said. “They have a private life, a family life. We don’t want to take that from them. When they are not with us, they play on the streets. They play with their friends. Sometimes that’s more important. They have the ball at their feet without anyone telling them what to do.”
A.S. Junior Elite
As Ajax Academy say, Players need to turn up to their sessions "for all business", so rest and recovered Players, raring to go, is key. A.S. Junior Elite is no different, especially with how we train! Therefore, we offer the following to our Teams:
